Appealing Unattractive
The Paradox of Negative Aesthetics
What makes the unappealing, appealing? Why do we feel drawn and attracted towards certain images, that display scenes that we find rather repelling?
The Appealing Unattractive is an image, form, and colour research in which I evaluate and define what elements we find attractive, and which drive us off.
I seek the boundary between the attractive and unattractive, how they interact with one another, and where they find their balance.
Publication and Psychological Deep Dive
My research is documented and published, with thanks to CANON and Lecturis Publishers in book form: ‘Language of the Image’. The book also features the complementary essay 'The Appealing Of The Unattractive'. This essay provides a deep exploration into the human mind's reaction to negative aesthetics, examining how we process fear, pain, gore, and subjects often considered taboo, such as freakshows and BDSM.
