Phila
Phila is one of the four designs I developed during the Zuiver x ELLE Decoration Scholarship, for the collection of Zuiver, Zuiver Group.
For the Scholarship, I spend a month at one of Zuiver's producers in Belgium, to see and experience their process from A-Z and create a commercial textile product.
Whilst being in this new environment, I got very much inspired by the possibilities within the production facility, but even more so by its restrictions and the restrictions of the industrial weaving loom.
Industrial weaving process
The few colours of yarns that were available to me, existed out of two different materials: a thin matt and a thicker shiny yarn. The two need to be carefully mixed over the surface of the rug in order to create a comfortable and even texture. The process of balancing between what was practically possible and what my imagination thought to be possible led to two beautiful colourways: A warm and natural Terra, and a fresh calming Blue.
The shape of the rug was even more challenging to produce and is therefore hand finished. It is designed to balance and soften the straight lines within the modern home's architecture and therefore create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere.
